Espanha - Madrid center / Fundación ABD / May 2017

Assim é a vida…

Mal comparando, fez-me lembrar a zona do Martim Moniz.

English version

After a visit to Support Center for Families, I was lucky to get a meeting with the Fundación ABD  in Madrid. I was especially interested in the fact that the organization was also focused on social innovation and internationalization and I wanted to understand better how they do it.

I met Laura Pinheiro, a dynamic and very nice lady, at the headquarters of one of the projects, near the subway station of Francos Rodríguez.
Laura gave me a framework of the organization and explained the investment that it has been made in extending the scope of the territory where they intervene. In fact, if the Fundación ABD started in Barcelona, today it is in Madrid, Castilla, Baleares and Andalusia.
Currently, the commitment for internationalization is an assumed strategy and involves the establishment of partnerships and the development of joint projects with organizations from other countries, investigating and exchanging knowledge.

Associated with this area is the investment that is made in social innovation, since for the organization it is fundamental to update, adapt and improve the responses to current and emerging needs. Thus it promotes a transversal strategy of reflection, analysis and adjustment of the action.
In my opinion, a little bit different from the organizational culture that I usually know, in which employees are supposed to work (act) and the spaces for joint reflection are little or nothing valued ...

Several projects have emerged from this investment, such as Energy Control (a program to prevent drug addiction in festive and leisure areas, which has received recognition from public authorities and international organizations) or the creation of multifamily groups applied to the community context. Laura offered me a pack of Energy Control materials and invited me to participate in the multifamily group that would happen later, at the end of the day. The group is facilitated by her and a few other colleagues. I was delighted to realize that this lady, although assuming a strategic role in the organization, continues to work as a technician, which sometimes is not easy to happen ...

I left happily and decided to go to another place that I heard about - the Patio Maravillas. I moved towards the Tribunal subway area. I ran the streets full of shops, restaurants and terraces packed with people, very neat and beautiful. It was between the area of Universida and Justicia and I was enchanted with the life and energy of the city at that time of the day.
Later I realized that the address I had was not from the project I was looking for but from a cannabis club😄
I followed the path, insisting on searching for the place. I ended up going to Calle de Pez where I discovered that the project had been deactivated 2 years ago. Such is life ... In a dry heat, I quietly sought to observe and explore the city.

I went to the Plaza de San Domingo, I walked the Gran Via to the Plaza del Callao and from there, through Calle Preciados, to the Puerta del Sol. Throughout my tour, I noticed the increase in tourists and the incredible concentration of shopping centers.
In Puerta del Sol, a demonstration against domestic violence was taking place, which had a strong impact on me.

My friend Yoni (a traveling Madrilenian, currently in Ghana) had recommended me to go to Lavapiés, a tip corroborated by my host David. I followed Calle Carretas, I crossed the zone of the Plaza Tirso de Molina, all the area of Embajadores, up to the Plaza Lavapiés.
This area has risen much more interest in me. Barely comparing, it reminded me of the Martim Moniz  area ( (in Lisbon). Stores full of products from Latin America and Asia, African hairdressers, Arab food, a miscellany of colors and life! Fewer tourists, fewer people, more police presence but, in my opinion, an area with a much more marked character than the one that had gone before. Loved it! I decided to rest and stopped at a brewery, where I met a very nice couple from the Equator, living in Madrid many years ago. I talked to them a lot.

It was around 6:00 p.m. and I would only meet David around 8:00 p.m. I decided to take part in the family group and it was the best I did! Not only I got a better understanding of the methodology and the operationalization of the intervention, but the experience, in personal terms, was absolutely fascinating! 😊
And it was with a full heart that I went to catch up David, who was waiting for me by the Iglesia subway. A really fun night was expecting us and a great weekend was about to start! (reviewed by Graça Braga)
