Colombia - Bogotá - Oct 2017

For a English version please scroll down

Passo a explicar melhor…

English version

I arrived to Lisbon from Bogotá at the end of October, and not even a week later I flew to Azores. On the way back, the days seemed swallowed up in time, between the "readapt" to my life in Lisbon and to respond to a series of urgent commitments.

Suddenly, it's been over a month and so much has happened that I wonder about the pertinence of writing about something that has occurred seems like eternities. I am aware of the influence of memory on our experiences, also changing the perception we have about them. To help, I lost most of the photographs taken in the Colombian capital... Even so, I still decided to take the risk.

My time in Bogota is always very connected to my family. Being able to be with my brother, my sister-in-law and my nephews is always a joy! This time it was even more comforting since it was not easy for me to leave Peru. I've been there for five intense days.

As usual, I've been more concerned with being with them than visiting the city. But Bogota is vibrant and I have already promised myself that the next time I go there I will try to resist this anxiety of being always with them, the result of the awareness of an announced separation.

Nevertheless, I strongly recommend a trip to the Usaquén Park, located in one of the chic zones of the city. It has a famous fair on Sunday, full of handicrafts, jewelry, clothes, gastronomic products, etc. It is colorful and full of life also by the performances of artists, musicians, painters, among others. It stretches along the picturesque streets, filled with cafes and restaurants that invite you to enter. I loved the program!

I also had the privilege of going with Angela to the historical center of the city, which for me is truly charming! My sister-in-law knows the zone well and it is evident the natural pride that she feels in being Colombian. I'll explain better ...

The famous district of Candelaria is characteristic for its colorful houses, colonial and republican style. It is a bohemian and artistic neighborhood with restaurants, bars, craft shops everywhere. It reminds me of Bairro Alto (in Lisbon), although at the same time it has little to do with it. It is one of the areas of choice for young people to go out at night and I was struck by some murals, example of urban art in the Colombian capital.

In this area you will also find some of the main museums such as the Botero Museum or the Gold Museum. The imponent Plaza de Bolivar is another attraction and as we cross it we saw the Catedral Primera, the Presidential Palace and the National Capitol.

Next to this square is the Teatro de Colón. It has a neoclassical style and it is a reference since it is also the national theater. On that day, the streets were heavily policed and with restricted access because there was a meeting with senior political officials, exactly in this building.

In the district of Candelaria it is also impossible to remain indifferent to the Church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. It is striking because it is white and red, with a distinctly Moorish style. We were fortunate to be able to visit its interior and I can assure you that it is beautiful!

We ate at a typical restaurant very friendly, equivalent to our tasca (in Portugal), with very tasty traditional Colombian food. Like in Peru, the menu is very well served, and I realize that it would be sufficient to me a plate to feel satisfied.

This neighborhood also has several pastries with typical sweets and despite my meal, I ended up taking some home 😄

I was truly delighted with this locality and if I wasn’t with my family, it would surely be my area of choice. But there are many more points of interest in this magnificent city. Fortunately I am sure that I will return 😉 (reviewed by Gonçalo Coelho Rosa)
