Portugal - Açores / São Miguel - Nov 2017

For a English version please scroll down

                                                Lagoa do Canário

O Filipe esperava-me pacientemente no aeroporto.

Visitámos as caldeiras e piscinas. Fomos à Barragem da Fajã do Redondo e todo o trilho do Salto do Cabrito. Deslumbrante!

English version

Azores are an archipelago of volcanic origin, composed of 9 islands. I have already had the opportunity to be in 5 of them. It’s one of the most beautiful places in the world! However, the last time I had been there was about 8 years ago, so a looooooong time ago.

I was challenged by my friend Filipe to go there in the first week of November, taking advantage of the All Saints' holiday. After a brief search, I found a plane ticket accessible to my wallet and I decided to accept the invitation.
After a super troubled boarding, with a couple of plane replacements (right after Halloween, what did I expect?), I flew to São Miguel. Due to the delay in departure, I arrived it was already 2 am, dead tired.
                                                                       Lagoa de Santiago

Filipe was waiting patiently at the airport. This friend of mine is from Lisbon but has lived for many years on the largest island in the archipelago. We get together especially in the summer when he is on vacation in the mainland, for some snacks and good wine. He is a sensitive, intelligent man with a caustic sense of humour. Despite giving the idea of being unconcerned and "not wanting to know", he is kind of shy and reserved. Maybe that's one of the reasons he's so horrified of taking pictures. I'm a woman who can respect that, so as promised, his presentation is made.

São Miguel is a beautiful island! The weather was perfect for sightseeing. Sunny but not too hot. I let myself be led by my cicerone that took me to Vista do Rei, a famous sight, next to an abandoned giant hotel, from where you can see the Lagoa das 7 Cidades. From there we went to Lagoa do Canário, very, very beautiful, and we made a short walk to another famous sight, overlooking the Lagoa de Santiago.
On our way back, we had a coffee in the village of Lagoa das 7 Cidades. We also passed in the Mosteiros, with its black sand beach and natural pools, and we ended up at Ponta da Ferraria, full of people due to its natural pool of hot water. The sun was setting when we got there and nature toasted us with a sky of wonderful reddish tones!

The next day we went for a walk along the South Coast. It is worth going to Caloura, to go to the beach of Água D'Alto and stop in Vila Franca do Campo to eat a cheesecake. We also went to Furnas, an area famous for its emblematic Portuguese cozido, because it is cooked in holes in the ground.
After we went to the sight of Pico do Ferro and then to the Caldeiras, where I tasted the different sparkling waters, with a strange, “sulphury” flavour. We still had time to go to Ribeira Quente beach and end the day in Vila da Povoação to eat "fofas", a typical cake that reminds us of an éclair, but with chocolate. Delicious!

                                                                   Lagoa do Fogo

Azores are a natural paradise! In other words, being there and not go for a trek is a pity. My friend is not a fan of hiking but he knows that I am, so he kindly chose a beautiful trail of about 2 hours. He started by taking me to Ribeira Seca, to see a XVI century fountain, very well preserved. Then he took me to Areal de Santa Bárbara, the beach of choice for surfers here on the island, and then to Ribeira Grande. Here we started our trekking. We visited the boilers and pools. We went to the Fajã do Redondo dam and did the entire Salto do Cabrito trail. Gorgeous! It's worth it!
The walk opened our appetite and we went to São Brás, to the Cantinho do Cais, to eat the famous fish sauce. It is not worth describing, it can harm you 😜😋
Well-stocked and already late, we went to the Lagoa de S. Brás and the tea plantations of Porto Formoso, which offer an extraordinary landscape.

But São Miguel has so much to see and do. Coming here and not going to Lagoa do Fogo should be considered a crime. That's what we did the next day. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, despite the drizzle that fell that day. It’s beauty is touching and it’s so perfect that makes us believe that it did not happen by chance.

Despite not being pretty but very, very tasty, we went to eat the famous limpets, at Ribeira Grande. From there we went to Moinhos Beach. Afterwards we drove to the Ribeira dos Caldeirões and the Northeast of the island. Here we made the Ponta da Madrugada and finished with a trip to Lagoa do Congro.

It is not possible to refer in a chronicle all there is to see and do in São Miguel. Still, the trail of Janela do Inferno remains in my top and the joy felt when I reviewed a companion of the Camino de Santiago, my friend Eduardo.
These days were fantastic! I am particularly grateful to Filipe for the generous, kind and affectionate way he received me and to life, for the opportunities that it has been giving me (reviewed by Maria João Venâncio).
